Ashlin Visits the Shop of David Monette PDF Print E-mail

On October 11, 2010, Ashlin visited the workshop of David Monette to select new mouthpieces and to plan for a new horn.   Here are some pics and a video of that meeting.

Check out this video:  ASHLIN PARKER FROM NEW ORLEANS JAZZ ORCH [HQ]

David Monette's description of the meeting:  Trumpeter Ashlin Parker and trombonist Michael Watson visited the shop yesterday. They both play with Irvin Mayfield in the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra, and this was their first visit to the shop. Ashlin has a horn on order, and wanted to come in and play for us so we could get an idea of what to make him. Looks like some personalized variation on the new MF STC we are building right now for Patrick Hession will probably be the ticket for him. For mouthpieces he ended up liking the B4LD SLAP in an LT weight for use in the big band, and a custom B4LD rim / B2S3 cup for his small group jazz mouthpiece. Michael selected a PRANA TS11 mouthpiece to fix the "flat high D" on his old mouthpiece, and when the horn work was done he then demonstrated his Tuvan throat singing! Seems like a lot of players we meet have learned to do this, and like others Mike agrees it really helps with breath control and tone production. Thanks for coming by you guys! And Ashin, we look forward to building you a killing new horn!

Charlotte native Ashlin Parker never aspired to win a Grammy, he only focused on making great music and creating a jazz experience that audiences could enjoy.

“I can’t say that I ever dreamed of winning a Grammy because the type of music I play represents only 2 percent of record sales,” said Parker. “When I watch the Grammys I see Lil Wayne, and I see all the rap music. I forget there is a whole section on jazz music that just doesn’t get televised.”

The 27-year-old trumpeter is the youngest member of the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra. The 15-piece ensemble’s latest release “Book One” won the Grammy for Best Large Jazz Ensemble.

Parker first learned that he and his bandmates won the award when he saw the announcement on Facebook.

“The feeling was amazing,” he said. “It’s still soaking in.”

Parker developed his appreciation for classical jazz at an early age.
